Countdown to Festival 2010 Visitors to date

The Skiatook Bluegrass Festival is an annual event sponsored by the Skiatook Bluegrass Association.  The festival has steadily grown every year and we are looking forward to putting on our sixth festival.  The upcoming festival will be held June 3 - 5, 2010.  Essential information is given below, more detailed information can be found by following the links on your left and right.

Overview

The festival is located in Skiatook, Oklahoma. Skiatook is a small friendly community located in the heart of Green Country, approx. 25 miles north of Tulsa Oklahoma. In addition to the festival, the area features the most beautiful lake in Oklahoma, the Tall Grass Prairie National Wildlife Preserve, Woolaroc, to name a few.

Even though we experienced near record breaking temperatures (105 degrees) during the 2009 festival, we still had a very positive attendance. Ours surveys showed that we had guest for 30 Oklahoma communities as will as 9 different states!

Our 2010 band line up is the best yet! We have moved the dates up to the first week in June to escape the heat that we experienced last year. Thanks to the help of the Town of Skiatook and Osage County, the festival grounds are top notch. Improved drainage, additional electrical outlets, a beautiful permanent stage, several truck loads of gravel for the roads, and a 60’ x 60’ shade structure will insure the 2010 guests a quality experience.

Ticket prices are a modest $5 for Thursday Night (gospel night), $10 for Friday or Saturday, OR $20 for a three day pass! RV sites with water and electric are $15 per day, tent camping is $3 per day.

The Youth fiddle Contest is always a crowd pleaser. There are four divisions: pee wee, junior junior, junior, and open. Children from 1 to 15 are welcome to participate.

Festival Wrap Up

It was hot!  Words such as inferno come to mind, and we may have picked the three hottest days of the summer to host our festival.  Attendance was off a bit this year, no doubt due to the extreme heat.  The bands were excellent and those who attended enjoyed themselves thoroughly. The maiden performance of Gospel Night was well received.   We made great improvements in the facilities.  The large shade structure replete with misters and fans made the heat much more bearable for our audience, while improved roads and drainage have made slipping and sliding in and out of the festival grounds a thing of the past.  We truly thank all the intrepid souls who braved the heat and forged their way to the festival.  Many thanks to those who filled out the survey -- this helps us plan for an even better festival next year. And of course a special heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors and volunteers who made our festival possible.  The Youth Fiddle Contest results are given on the Youth Fiddle Contest page.  A DVD of festival photos is available from York Event Photography for $25.  Contact Jeanie York:  jyorkpics@gmail.com.  We acknowledge a special "Troupers of the Year"  award to Jim Blair and City Moon and their Tribute to Hank Williams, Sr. Watching them was a special treat and they did an excellent job.  We couldn't help but thinking -- poor devils, dressed to the absolute nines, they must be sweltering in the heat.  What a bunch of troupers!  We also had quite a surprise during our raffle contest.

The young lady who won the mandolin in the raffle contest certainly beat the odds.  When the time came for the drawing, they initially tried to find a pre-reading aged youngster to avoid any possibility of "influencing" the draw.  They finally settled on a young lady who walked up and promptly drew her ticket out of the hat!  Go figure the odds on that.  The young lady is Haley Carroll, 10 years old from Jay, OK.  She is the daughter of Cory & Heath Carroll and the granddaughter of Brad and Shirley Adams. The mandolin is a Rogue, signed by Doyle Lawson. Haley enjoys reading, playing her fiddle, swimming, and gardening with her 4-H group. She'll be in the 5th grade at Jay Upper Elementary. Now, she's excited about playing the mandolin!  Thanks to all, we'll see you again next year.

In Closing

The festival is sponsored by the Skiatook Bluegrass Association (SBA).  In addition to the festival, the SBA activity promotes music in the schools, provides fiddles for children, and sponsors special events throughout the year.  Please sign our guestbook and sign up for our newsletter before you leave.  Our festival depends on the help of volunteers.  If you live in the Skiatook area we would appreciate your help with the festival.  Please volunteer.  We need help throughout the year and especially during festival week.  Thanks!
